Scoot Mods to My Honda Met

Ok, while the sun blazed hot upon the land I got in the 3 accessories that I ordered from my local Honda lady: black Ruckus mirrors; the Met rear carrier; and the Met front basket.

I installed these myself and felt like Xena, Warrior Princess or Towanda, Queen of the Amazons or some such character. Anyway, I moved through doubt and intimidation and got the suckers installed without a "hitch" using my trusty bicycle tool box. Did ok!

The mirrors were added because I felt like I could not see enough of a wide shot behind me on the Met's little round "chrome" mirrors. Plus I liked the look of the black on the Met.

The rear carrier is a "no brainer" because it holds my beloved black wire basket or a top case or a soft larger tail bag. Money well spent and I got a very good discount on all three from my Honda lady! (She's cool!)

The Met front basket is something I've oggled for years. It comes in black or white and of course I got the black. This thing is HUGE and opens up space for carrying bottled drinks, large coffee cups, lunches, caps, windbreakers, camera, ETC. I will have all these things at my finger tips while meandering and blasting along through the back roads.

I did have to drill 4 holes in my front leg shield and this gave me pause for about two days. Finally I "just did it" and I am glad I did. It does not look bad from the front and I did not destroy my baby in the process!

I am also wearing a hi-viz yellow vest from Olympia and am going to order some hi-viz yellow pants from MissingLink. I want to be seen by even comatose cage drivers!

I will order the Honda Met wind shield eventually for cold weather riding. Now that the 2013 Met is coming up, the older accessories will be snatched up quickly for the 2002-2009 Mets. The wind shield is my last OEM item.

Now I just need to find some "Squirt" decals and have some side lettering done!

I just love this little scooter!

  1. The baskets seem to suit the Met perfectly. They look great.

I can see how convenient that front one is going to be for a water bottle and camera. Good job getting in there and getting it done.

    1. Oh, thank you! I think it will come in handy in ways I cannot imagine.

My HHR has a "basket" like this in the dashboard and I put EVERYTHING in that spot!

      Works out great!

    1. You are hearing right! :=)

This is pretty much the Ruckus but with little features I wish it had all along!

Thanks! There is just something about riding a 49cc that gives me a little "rush" of joy!

  3. Wow. Tricked out! I like it! It's really quite the touring scooter! Perfect for friendly visits and runs around town. I love what you say about "comatose" drivers.

My post tomorrow will show my usual attire for riding. I've opted to keep my Metro as stock as possible and when I need to carry stuff it's on my back inside my white backpack.

Your accessories do make me so much more anxious (as in anxiety) to get to a new county where I can ride 40mph on new roads. Of course, I have to find that county first. I'm working on that...

    1. Martha-
I know you are in an exciting, but scarey phase right now! If you're like me you may be thinking about an area in terms of it's "scoot potential"! I hope you find great places to ride wherever you choose.

There is a guy on TotalRuckus in the Rides/Epic Journeys section. His thread is called something like "3 countries, 10,000 miles". All on a stock Met. You ought to see how he's got that scoot loaded for touring. It is amazing how much Rucks and Mets can hold.

Curious to see your attire. I have to admit that I am not "ATGATT". But I do feel safe in what I do wear which always includes a helmet and gloves.

    1. I take them on and off and only have them on when I am going to need them, like a grocery run.

The mice in our garage love to build nests in anything, so the bags stay in the house.

  6. My new post is up and I didn't feature my riding duds. Just didn't turn out the way I wanted, so I put up something that did turn out the way I wanted and people will enjoy it much more than looking at my scooter duds.

    I'll post that another time.

  7. I think I found your Met/Ruckus guy. But he's on a Ruckus, not a Metro and dragging a packed trailer! I love the photo of the Ruckus and trailer sitting in his motel room by his bed!

Did I find the right guy?

    1. Oops! I got my info mixed up...I've been following the Ruck guy you mentioned, but the Met guy did a trip from LA to Yosemite:

      Basically the same scooter...different shell!

  8. I did find that guy this morning, but then my connection went down. We are having a breezy day...

I admire him, but I can't help but think he beat this poor scooter to death. And how many Troopers stopped him? Is this even legal? Apparently so otherwise he would not be showing all these photos. I guess he stayed in the bike lane.

Amazing all that he got on there. Add his weight, the stuff and it's astonishing that he could get over 35mph. The Metro is a little workhorse! Thanks for telling me about this.

    1. I think that the Met/Ruckus engine is pretty tough and can take what he dished out. I've read of it going into the ten thousands of miles+.

I was surprized at what looked to be Interstate highway shots too. I did not think any bike or scooter under a certain cc could legally ride on the Interstate. Maybe it was a state highway.

I think it's fun to peruse the "Epic Rides" section on TR and see what people have done on a Ruckus or Met. Others post too, but these seem to be the main scooters used.

I hope to one day post an epic ride there myself! It's a dream. Maybe I will start with riding across the bottom of Ohio and then expand to doing the entire Ohio Byway route which goes through OH, IN, and ILL.

With that second one I'd prefer some compatible 49cc riding companions.

  9. Love the flag! I checked the link and it took me to something about lost luggage. Turns out it is www.missinglnk.com

Almost bought another scooter today, but didn't. Maybe it was because it was too hot.

People ask me why I like the small cc scoots/bikes and I want to say because every ride is an adventure, but I've learned in from saying this in the past hardly anyone gets it. You are getting one wonderful little adventure scooter fitted out. Yay!

Thanks for the correction on that link!

What scoot were you looking at today?

I do like the term "adventure scooting" to describe just getting out and exploring and doing some back roads for a few hours, days, or weeks. I think town scooter riders are missing a lot of scooting fun if they just stick to commuting or grocery runs, don't you?

Hope you guys are staying cool in the city!
